Thassos

Is Thassos the best-kept secret of the Aegean Sea?

Every country map has a few gems and sometimes small treasures hidden in its corners.
One such treasure, hiding in plain sight at the top of every map of Greece, is the island of Thassos.
Thousands of years ago, settlers from the Paros island in the Cyclades followed a Delphic oracle and settled on this mystery island. The oracle’s counsel was clear: erect a city that could be seen from all vantage points, a feat made possible by the radiant, pure white marble sourced from nearby Aliki.
Thankfully, nowadays, we don’t have to consult Delphic oracles to travel to Thassos.
All we have to do is land at Alexander the Great airport outside of nearby Kavala city and take the ferry (while feeding the seagulls that invariably follow).

The story of Thassos Island starts with the mythological abduction of the beautiful princess Europa by the omnipotent Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods. Zeus transformed himself into a bull, abducted Europa, and swiftly carried her far away. One of her brothers, Thassos, in his quest to find his beloved sister, chanced upon a beautiful island, so beautiful and inviting that he decided to make it his new home. That island, which up to that time was known as Aeria (airy), Chryse (golden), and Hydonis (Hydonic), was named “Thassos” in his honor. You don’t need to feel sorry for his sister, though, as she gave her name to an entire continent!

Thassos is a rounded, mountainous, forested island close to the mainland of northern Greece.

Thassos is well-known for its breathtaking natural beauty.
The island is covered in beautiful pine forests, old, picturesque olive groves, and evergreen Mediterranean shrubs. Because the majority of these are aromatic, they fill the air with a characteristic fragrance. Needless to say, its honey is exceptional.

In the heat of August, beautiful wildflowers, such as this fine specimen of rock samphire, delight visitors and bees.

Thassos has always been a unique island, rich in history and natural treasures such as gold and the island’s famed pure white marble. Legendary queen Cleopatra of Egypt regularly dispatched ships to Thassos to bring back the prized products of the land, such as honey, olive oil, herbs, and the island’s famous wine.

Traditional, picturesque villages are hidden by the wild and hilly terrain. Usually built as far away as possible from the pirate-ravaged shores.
A plethora of stunning beaches, bathed in crystal-clear, often emerald waters, surround the island. Its diverse coastline offers everything from beautiful pebble-strewn shores to fine sandy beaches, ensuring you’ll find the perfect spot to amaze you.

Some of Thassos’ beaches feature sand so fine, it’s almost velvety and powdery to the touch.
The rocky hills of Thassos offer amazing views of the beaches and the Aegean.

Thassos has a mild Mediterranean climate with short, mild winters and long summers.
The summer months are characterized by very little rain, calm winds, and a sea perfect for swimming. After all, 2400 years ago, Hippocrates, “the father of medicine,” really liked the climate of Thassos!

However, Hippocrates was either lucky or the climate of Thassos has changed over the last two thousand years. The kind of winter that he experienced is not the norm nowadays. Winters can be cold, but they are milder than on the mainland.
